Tesla Plans to Build EV Ecosystem in India to Boost Sales: Reports

Since launching its imported Model Y variants in India, the EV automaker is now focused on creating a network of charging points near owners’ homes, and other destinations like malls, hotels, and restaurants to boost its own footprint in India.
Tesla is seeking to establish a robust electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in India to support its long-term sales and adapt to the country’s evolving mobility landscape. It officially launched in India in 2025, and as of now operates as the company’s 50th global market.
According to a report by The Economic Times, the strategy is focused on expanding infrastructure that helps enable the adoption of EVs in urban areas. Sharad Agarwal, GM Tesla India, stated, “We always build our infrastructure around the lifestyle of our customers, where they eat, where they work, where they go for staycations,” pointing out that the future roadmap plans to extend to all major cities.
The company is focused on creating charging points near owners’ homes and other public destinations like malls, hotels, and restaurants. Not to mention superchargers in key cities.
In 2025, the company sold 109 units after commencing deliveries in September. High import duties, currently at 70%, mean the Model Y is about 30 per cent more expensive in India than in the United States, with prices at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh for the two variants.
Tesla has so far imported both variants from Shanghai. The company has been driven in its expansion in India.
It opened its first experience centre in Mumbai in July, followed by a second in Delhi at Aerocity in August. With the upcoming Gurugram charging station, Tesla will have four charging stations nationwide, equipped with 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers.
While Tesla still has no plans yet for local manufacturing, the company has prioritised opening showrooms, importing vehicles, and enhancing service infrastructure in India.
Globally, Tesla delivered nearly 497,000 vehicles in the September 2025 quarter and reported a 12 per cent revenue increase to $28.1 billion, contributing to a reduction of carbon emissions by 32 million tonnes.
