India’s roads are chaotic, and let’s face it-  it’s not getting better anytime soon. Unless, of course, we decide to change that. Vehicles get stolen, vehicle numbers get forged and faked, emission regulations are in a grey area (literally), and there’s a lot more. In an effort to bring order (and visibility) – the government rolled out the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP).

HSRP compliance is legally mandatory for all vehicle owners in India. The goal is to standardise vehicle registration across the country with certain mandates in place and improve traffic management.  So, whether you’re buying a car or have been driving the same one for years, now is a good time to check if you’ve actually done the needful. You don’t want to be pulled over one fine morning for something that could have been sorted in just a few clicks. This article breaks down the basics and important things you need to know about HSRP number plate, and what you need to do to get started.

What Are High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP)

The Central Motor Vehicles Rules of 1989, issued by MoRTH, apply to every vehicle; whether it’s fresh off the showroom floor or an old faithful that’s seen a few monsoons. HSRP number plates are tamper-proof number plates introduced to bring consistency across the country and tighten road security. Here’s what they do:

  • Durable aluminium base:  Long-lasting and weather-resistant.
  • Chromium Ashoka Chakra hologram: Tamper-resistant and easily identifiable.
  • Laser-etched PIN: A 10-digit code linked to your vehicle’s chassis and engine, stored in VAHAN’s central database.
  • Snap-lock rivets: Once fixed, they can’t be removed without damage.
  • Hot-stamped ‘IND’ in blue: A visible standard across the board.
  • Retro-reflective film: Better visibility at night or during rain.
  • Colour-coded sticker: Placed on your windshield, it indicates your fuel type. Colour codes: light blue (Petrol/CNG), orange (Diesel), green (Electric).
  • Optional RFID integration: Enables electronic tracking, though not yet rolled out at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is HSRP really mandatory for old vehicles too?

Yes –  even if your vehicle is ten years old and running just fine, you still need to get the HSRP. It’s not just for new cars or bikes; the rule applies across the board.

2. Where do I apply for an HSRP online and how do I know it’s legit?

Stick to authorised portals like BookMyHSRP.com or the one linked to your vehicle manufacturer or state transport department. If a site looks sketchy or asks for weird details, back away.

3. What documents do I need to get my HSRP?

You’ll usually need your vehicle’s registration number, chassis and engine numbers, and a valid ID. For offline applications, carry a photocopy of your RC and ID proof  and possibly your PUC and insurance too, just in case.

4. What happens if I lose my HSRP or it gets damaged?

You can apply for a replacement online – most portals have a section for “Replacement” or “Duplicate Plate.” You might need an FIR if it was stolen, so best keep a soft copy of everything handy.

5. How do I check if my HSRP order is confirmed or delayed?

Log back into the portal where you applied, enter your order ID and registration number, and you’ll see a status update like “In Production” or “Ready for Fitment.” If it’s stuck for too long, there’s usually a helpline or support email listed.
