a. Rooftop solar plant capacity depends on a few factors
i. Average power consumption of a household: An average power bill of
₹3000 a month at ₹5 per unit translates to a monthly consumption of 600
units of power and a daily consumption of 20 units of power. An average
rooftop solar plant generates about 4kW (units) of power per day. In this
case, a plant with 5kW capacity (5×4 = 20kW per day) would generate the
equivalent of average consumption of this household.
ii. Shadow-free terrace/roof area: Every additional kW capacity needs about
100sqft of shadow free area. Eg. A 4kW plant will need about 400sqft
iii. Budget: Average cost per kW capacity of a rooftop solar plant is about
₹50,000-60,000. Typically, an optimal rooftop solar plant (installed
capacity is equivalent to consumption patterns) breaks even in less than 3
years. The financing options combined with Government subsidy should
solve this constraint.
